Accused!

My family was once accused of doing something we did not do. It was a terrible feeling. Just having an accusation against you is grounds for suspicion and in some cases, condemnation. I recall pleading with our accuser, “Please don’t think that of us.” Then I stated our innocence and record of good standing with the person. It drove me absolutely nuts to be thought of in an unfavorable light when we didn’t deserve it.

As we all know by watching the news, someone very important is being accused of a terrible crime. I watched as he tearfully defended his innocence. He said at one point, “My life is ruined by these accusations.” He then appeared angry and tormented as he stood up for himself, recounting his stellar reputation as an adult. Unfortunately, in many ways this man’s life is ruined. He will never be able to teach or coach again because he has been accused and condemned in the court of public opinion. All it takes is an accusation…

When Jesus Christ our Lord was accused the scriptures say of Him, “He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, He did not open His mouth.” Isaiah 53:7 That must have been so difficult for Him in His humanity! It just goes to show how determined Jesus was to go to the cross for the salvation of our souls.

The reality of the matter is, we have an accuser in our lives as Christians. He is the enemy of our souls, Satan. He has been in the business a long, long time. We can learn a lot about how to deal with this accuser by looking at the scriptures.

“Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. The LORD said to Satan, "The LORD rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, the LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?” Zech. 3:1-2 Note, Joshua did not address the accuser of his soul at all. The Lord did! That is so important. We who are guilty of sin…that’s all of us, cannot defend ourselves in our own righteousness. The only righteousness we have is in Christ Jesus. It is imputed righteousness. However, because we are in Christ, the Lord defends us.

God’s word teaches us, our sin has been removed as “far as the east is from the west.” Psalm 103:12 Unlike empty accusations, some accusations from the enemy may be valid. But the shed blood of Jesus makes them null and void. In fact, Jesus prays and intercedes for us all the time. God’s word says, “Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is the One who died, but even more, has been raised; He also is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us. Rom 8:34 The Lover of our souls trumps any allegation from our enemy!

The good news is, one day the accuser will be shut up forever! What a day that will be! “Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night.” Rev 12:10

When you find yourself in the position of being accused remember, you are not the first and you won’t be the last. You are in good company. Jesus is interceding for you and God will deal with your accuser. The day will come when there will be no more accusations.

“Whilst people wholeheartedly talk wrongly about you openly, wholeheartedly talk rightly to God in silence and in faith! He knows everything! He sees everything! He hears everything! And He has the very right answer to everything!” ― Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
